Abstract

Teaching spatial orientation skills has emerged as an important area of knowledge and research, as it is gives us a greater understanding of the shared geographical space which we inhabit in modern times and that is inevitably interconnected by several complex issues that permeate social, political and biological dimensions in an increasingly globalized world. In this sense, the current review seeks to discuss the theoretical underpinnings of geographic literacy, so as to contribute to future research and pedagogical interventions in this area. The studies analyzed in this review reveal the practical experiences faced by students approaching geographical education, as well as the formative studies they receive within their educational and social environment and are of great importance for improving cartographic literacy.
