Abstract

Urban agglomerations appear in response to population growth, demanding housing close to large centers where there is a greater supply of work and basic services, causing environmental damage due to the lack of planning of constructions. This study used action research to understand changes in the behavior of 14 families living in a poor community in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, using non-formal education to encourage correct waste management, through workshops in which there was direct participant observation, in face-to-face and remote (online) meetings, structured questionnaires and interviews to assess the change in behavior regarding waste management – reduction, reuse, recycling and composting. Of these, 35.7% were completely adopted by the 14 families, with 33.9% that already adopted and continued with their sustainable practices, making a total of 69.6% of actions adopted, generating less impact on the environment, and improving quality of life through continued actions.
